The Rest of the Costume
The arms and legs are just regular clothes with black rings
painted on them. Actually, my arms are legs from baseball pants because I couldn't
find a shirt the right colour, and I safety-pinned them to a regular shirt. I don't think this worked out as well as an
actual shirt would have, so I'd recommend finding a shirt of the right colour.
I thought about making arms and legs from segments of sonotubes, or maybe using a flexible aluminum dryer vent, but this is actually closer to what Bender really looks like, not to mention easier. I used the same Rustoleum/Tremclad paint that I used on the body to paint the clothes. It doesn't cover as well on fabric, so get your clothes as close as possible to right shade of grey, and when in doubt go lighter rather than darker.
The feet coverings are paper mache. I used a cooler covered with a plastic bag for the mould. When paper mache'ing, don't go below halfway of the diameter of the mould or you won't get it off when it dries. It isn't the smoothest finish, but I couldn't think of any options for making it smoother (the feet are still somewhat flexible so drywall mud would just crack off). Besides, people aren't paying much attention to your feet.
You could also use cheap plastic bowls or something similar for the feet covers, but I couldn't find any that I thought looked right.
I didn't make hands like Bender, mainly because they would be too cumbersome to use as functional human hands, and I didn't want to be constantly struggling to open doors or pick things up. So I settled for grey gloves.
And the final results:
